Viscount Torrington is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1721 for Sir George Byng along with the title of Lord Byng of Southill.
Torrington Castle, which appears to have been erected in 1340, by Richard de Merton, who married an heiress of the Torrington family, stood on the south side of the town, near the edge of it high and steep precipice, overlooking the river Torridge.
Torrington was incorporated by Queen Mary, and a charter of the 15th of James I. It received another charter in the 2nd of James II.
Torrington was visited by the plague in 1591, and in the 17th century it was the scene of some of the important actions of the civil war.
