He is the winner of an unprecedented 6 Olympic gold medals in gymnasticsfor the Unified Team (CIS team) in 1992 Summer Olympics. His golds were in the team event, the all around, pommel horse, rings, vault (tie) and parallel bars. Only Mark Spitz has ever won more golds in a single Games. Vitaly continued until the 1996 Olympics, becoming world all around champion and winning numerous individual apparatus medals on the way. After his wife was involved in a horrific car accident and Scherbo had surgery on both shoulders, he has admitted he was tempted to give up gymnastics. His performance in Atlanta did reflect his lack of preparation time in that he was not at his best, but nonetheless his achievement in overcoming such adversity was remarkable. He won four bronze medals in an exceptionally tough field and was never anything less than a true sportsman. Scherbo was a favourite with the American crowd, who appreciated him for both his greatness and the fact that he was there at all after all the problems. Vitaly Scherbo (or Shcherbo), born January 13, 1972 in Minsk, Byelorussian SSR, is a Belarusian (and former Soviet) gymnast and is one of the most successful male gymnasts of all time.
Scherbo was introduced to gymnastics at the age of seven by his mother in an attempt to channel the energy of her highly intelligent but uncontrollable young son.
Scherbo's first international performances were in 1990-1991, when he competed for the USSR team at the World Championship and the World Cup.
