Introduction

Vivi Ornitier first appears at the beginning of the game, watching Zidane's airship coming to land in Alexandria. Being a Black Mage, he shares many similarities with normal humans but also has differences that include a black aura around his outer skin, glowing yellow eyes, and the ability to cast magic. Despite being just nine years old, Vivi is incredibly powerful and intelligent for his age. With some encouragement from Adelbert Steiner (who sometimes refers to him as 'Master Vivi'), he joins Zidane and others and begins to learn of his true existence. Vivi is unsure of himself or who he truly is and finds the world pointless. As such he may seem lost a lot of the time.

Vivi may come from the Italian, Vivo, meaning "To live," a reference to how he is unsure whether he really exists or not, or if he is just a puppet.

The Black Mages

Black Mages are used in the Final Fantasy IX universe as "dummy" footsoldiers. They are mainly employed by Queen Brahne in her attempt to secure all the summoning magic in the world. The other Black Mages in the game are somewhat larger than Vivi and wear purple jackets rather than blue. Vivi desperately wishes to find out if he was simply created in a machine as just another soldier, and sets out with Zidane to see if this is true or not. The truth is revealed to him by Kuja and the Black Mages in the Black Mage Village later on in his adventures. Vivi realizes that the Black Mages "stop" after a predesignated time, somewhat equivalent to death in humans. However, a conversation with the Black Mage leader suggests that Vivi was the black mage prototype, which is why he is 9 years old (most Black Mages only live for slightly over a year). After the defeat of Kuja, Vivi gives a monologue explaining the ending and saying his farewell to his friends. Though it is not explained how, Vivi manages to have a group of children in the time following Kuja's defeat; some fans speculate that he used a process similar to the one Kuja described at the Iifa tree to simply create more "prototypes", using the machines at Dali. Vivi, as he appears in Kingdom Hearts II

Redesigned by Tetsuya Nomura, Vivi makes an appearance in the Disney/Square-Enix crossover Kingdom Hearts II. However, the Vivi in Kingdom Hearts II does not seem to show any of the magical abilities of his FFIX counterpart, nor is referred to as a Black Mage. Vivi is apparently a member of the Twilight Town Disciplinary Committee led by Seifer Almasy, though it is said that he is not so much a member as someone who ends up doing Seifer's biddings due to his meekness. The virtual simulation of Vivi's was briefly used on occasion by several Nobodies in order to do battle with Roxas. Vivi is voiced by Melissa Disney in the US version and by Ikue Otani in the Japanese version.
