Of all the accomplishments of Apollo 8, the one Borman recalls most fondly is what the mission did for a nation and world in serious need of good news.
Thirty years later, Apollo 8 is being viewed as the mission that catapulted a crew of three and the aspirations of NASA into a new phase of space exploration – the close investigation and subsequent visit to Earth's nearest celestial neighbour, the moon.
As Robert Zimmerman, author of Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, remarks, "I remember how it really was the mission with the most cultural and historic impact at the time." In fact, the photographs taken during the mission are to this day some of the most famous images of the moon ever taken.
