Volo di Notte (1938) is a one-act opera by the Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola. It emphasizes individual suffering and was written as a response to the rise of fascism.

Canti di prigionia and Il prigionero are reflections of this impassioned concern; the former was his first true protest work.
During World War II he was in the dangerous position of opposing the Nazis; though he tried to go about his career as usual, and did, to a limited extent, on two occasions he was forced to go into hiding for several months.
He had no more finished compositions after 1972 due to his failing health, until he died in Florence in 1975 of edema of the lungs; however, there are a very few sketches and fragments of work from this time, including a vocal work left unfinished just hours before he passed on.

In 1931, he was granted a diploma for composition and became a lecturer at the Conservatorio di Musica L. Cherubini in Florence, where he stayed for 36 years.
With the Canti di Liberazione a trilogy is completed, which beginning are the Canti di Prigionia and the center part is the one-act opera Il Prigioniero.
Dallapiccola died on February 19, 1975 in Firenze from edema of the lungs.
