Encyclopedia > Von Beckerath

Jürgen von Beckerath (born 19 February 1920) is a German egyptologist. He is a prolific writer and has published numerous articles in journals such as Orientalia, Göttinger Miszellen (GM), Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt (JARCE), Archiv für Orientforschung (AfO) and Studien Zur Altägyptischen Kultur (SAK) among others. Together with Kenneth Kitchen, he is one of the leading experts of the Third Intermediate Period of Egypt February 19 is the 50th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar. ... 1920 is a leap year starting on Thursday (link will take you to calendar) // Events January January 7 - Forces of Russian White admiral Kolchak surrender in Krasnoyarsk. ... His many popular German language publications include Handbuch der Ägyptischen Königsnamen, 2nd edition (Mainz, 1999) and Chronologie des Pharaonischen Ägypten ("Chronology of the Egyptian Pharaohs"; Mainz, 1997), which is regarded by academics as one of the best and most comprehensive books on the Chronology of Ancient Egypt and on the reigns of its various Pharaohs. German (called Deutsch in German; in German the term germanisch is equivalent to English Germanic), is a member of the western group of Germanic languages and is one of the worlds major languages. ...

Throughout his academic career, Beckerath has dispelled many previously held assumptions or beliefs by thoroughly analyzing the evidence. For instance, in GM 154 (1996), pp.19-22, he examined and published a privately held and poorly known Year 22 stela dated to Osorkon II's reign which was frequently called a Jubilee stela. Beckerath noted that this document did not preserve any mention of a Sed festival for Osorkon II in this Year as one would expect if he had indeed celebrated his Jubilee in this Year. Beckerath aptly noted that this evidence casts serious doubt upon the idea that the damaged Sed Jubilee date in Osorkon II's Bubastis Festival Hall should be read as Year 22, rather than Year 30 of his reign (the latter reading is also possible). His analysis thus undermined the traditional view that Osorkon II celebrated his Sed Jubilee in his Year 22. Traditionally, Jubilee Feasts were held on the 30th Year of a king's reign during the Libyan period as is evidenced by the practices of other 22nd Dynasty kings such as Osorkon I, Shoshenq III and Shoshenq V. Beckerath, consequently, demonstrated that Osorkon II was far likelier to have celebrated his first Sed Feast in his 30th Year instead. Stele is also a concept in plant biology. ... Osorkon II was pharaoh of Ancient Egypt between 872 BC to 837 BC. Osorkon succeeded his father Takelot I to the throne of Egypt and initially ruled all of Egypt. ... The Jubilee in both the Jewish and Christian traditions is a year of celebration and forgiveness originally held every 50 years. ... Their kings were Meshwesh Libyans (they had been settling in Egypt since the 20th dynasty). ... Osorkon I was the second king of Egypts 22nd Dynasty and ruled around 922 BC-887 BC. He succeeded Shoshenq I his father who died within a few years of his succesful campaign against both Israel and Judah. ...
