Friedrich Wilhelm Augustus Steuben, Baron von Steuben (September 17, 1730-November 28, 1794) was a Prussian army officer who served with George Washington in the American Revolutionary War and is credited with teaching American troops the essentials of military drill and discipline.
Von Steuben became a citizen of the United States in 1783 and, following retirement from the army, resided in New York City where he became one of the most popular figures in the city.
