Encyclopedia > Vuk Brankovic

Vuk Branković (Вук Бранковић) lived in Serbia during the 14th century. His family was very powerful: his ancestors had been on and off the Serb throne, the family was always on the right-hand of the Tsar, and Vuk himself married tsar Lazar's daughter. He was even a general in Lazar's army.

Folk tradition portraits Vuk as a traitor: supposedly, Vuk tarnished the family name when he betrayed Lazar at the battle of Kosovo, in 1389. He might have been justified in his retreat, but he will be forever remembered by his people as a traitor and as a coward.

History doesn't consider that this is true.
