WEWB originated as an independent station in 1985 under the call letters WUSV (Union Street Video). In 1987, WMHT Educational Telecommunications bought the station, gave it the new callsign of WMHX, and made it a secondary PBS station for the market. This lasted until 1991 when, due to financial difficulties, WMHX went off-the-air. Further financial difficulties at WMHT led to a sale of WMHQ in the late 1990's. After a sale to Sinclair Broadcast Group fell through, Tribune Broadcasting bought the station in 1999. On September 6, 1999, WMHQ became an affiliate of the WB and received a new callsign – WEWB – as well as the nickname WB45.
