History

The Milwaukee School of Engineering was the creator of one of Milwaukee's first radio stations. On September 22, 1922, WIAO went on the air. Transmission was at a wavelength of 360 meters (833.3 Khz) with 100 watts of power. in 1925, WIAO became WSOE, and changed once again to WISN in 1928. By this time, the station was operated by MSOE in conjunction with a local daily newspaper, the Wisconsin News. In November of that year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigned WISN a frequency of 1120 KHz at 250 watts of power. It was also ordered to share time with WHAD, Marquette University's station, with WISN operating six days a week and WHAD operating one. However, federal law at the time prohibited schools from any associations with commercial radio, so MSOE divested its interest in WISN.
