The station was almost sold to Columbia Pictures in 1982, and its call sign was prematurely changed to WCPX-TV (which remained with the station even though the deal did not materialize) on June 6 of that year. Upon its purchase by the Washington Post Company in 1997, the station changed its call sign to WKMG in honor of longtime Washington Post publisher, Katharine M. WKMG filed an appeal in the 5th District Court of Appeal in Florida to vacate the order and allow the station to broadcast the reports.
According to its Web site, WKMG is appealing Powell’s latest ruling because the station says it still violates the First Amendment in that it would not allow reports containing medical information and communication between Guetzloe and his attorneys to air.
