History

WLWC began broadcasting on April 13, 1997, as a WB affiliate, owned by Fant Broadcasting[1] and controlled by NBC O&O WJAR-TV under a local marketing agreement. At that time, the station aired a WJAR-produced newscast at 10 PM.[2] However, Fant sold the station (along with WWHO-TV in Columbus, Ohio, which had been under an LMA with WCMH-TV, the station that previously used the WLWC calls) to Viacom in July of the same year, which resulted in the WJAR LMA being terminated in September (WWHO has since been sold to LIN TV, whose flagship station is ironically located in Providence), and in exchange, Viacom's NBC affiliate in Hartford, WVIT, became an NBC O&O. Because of its close proximity to UPN owned and operated station WSBK-TV, WLWC continued to primarily air WB programming. Starting in May 2000, when proximity had become a non-issue, the WB has been a secondary affiliation with the primary affiliation's switching to UPN, because of this, the station will become Providence's The CW affiliate when it replaces both networks in September 2006.
