History

It was originally started as WUHF-TV then it became WNYC after the Municipal Broadcasting Authority took ownership. They originally ran PBS programming but later on ran more independent educational shows as wella s some PBS stuff. In the 1980's they began commercial operation at night only with ethnic and brokered programming. But they retained educational shows during the day.

In 1995 New York City sold WNYC TV in order to raise revenue. They had bids from companies like Paramount, Westinghouse, Pappas, among others. But ITT and Dow Jones won the bid at 200 million dollars, and the sale would only include the broadcast license. Their plan was to offer business news during the day and New York professional Sports at night.

The sale became final on July 1, 1996. WNYC TV's ethnic shows were picked up by WMBC 63 localed about 50 miles from new York City. Dow Jones/ITT did not have the format ready yet so they opted to run ESPN Classic Sports at night and Infomercials during the day. The Call letetrs became WBIS on july 1 of 1996.

The new format which was a join venture of ITT and Dow Jones would launch in January of 1997. They used the trademark moniker S+. The station was therefore known as S +. During the day from 6 AM to 7 PM they ran locally produced business news. At night they ran pro sports and on overnights they ran classic sports. Unfortunately not even four months later in June after S+ premiered Dow Jones/ITT wanted out. They were unprofitable and did not want to put any more money into this venture. As a result they sold WBIS to Paxson Communications for 225 Million dollars. The format was taken off the air later in June and reruns of S+ programming ran until Paxon would take over the station through an LMA until the sale could close later in the year. On July 1, 1997 WBIS 31 was renamed WPXN. Initially the station ran Bloomberg Business News during the day, some left over sports at night, would preview vvarious start up cable networks at night through the year, and run informercials overnights and weekends, and religion Sunday mornings.

At the end of August 1998 WPXN along with the rest of the Paxson premiered the PAX television network. They offered family entertainment from Noon to Midnight. On overnights they ran Praise Tv for an hour and Worship Music from 1 to 6 AM. Mornings consisted of religious shows and infomercials. On Saturdays kids shows were run from 8 AM-Noon, Infomercials noon to 3 PM and Family entertainment till Midnight. Sundays were the same format except there was religion on Sunday mornings.

By 2003 Pax TV was not beginning operation until 5 PM weekdays and 6 PM weekends. WPXN was now running infomercials until 5 PM weekdays and 6 PM weekends except for a few religious shows weekday mornings and Sunday mornings along with afew educational kids shows on Saturdays.
