History

In the early 1970's, it was playing a 24-hour hard rock format. At that time it was owned by CBS radio. In the mid 1970's WAAL was known as WAAL Stereo FM 99. In 1979, WAAL FM Stereo 99 was the number 1 radio station in the Southern Tier. In the late 1980's and early 1990's, it was known as 99.1 WAAL the Hot FM, which played a mix of album-oriented rock, disco, electric rock, soul, folk music, rock 'n roll, and Top 40. WAAL was acquired by Citadel Broadcasting in 1998 from Wicks Broadcast Group. Album-oriented rock (sometimes referred to as Adult-oriented rock or as West Coast Rock), abbreviated AOR and originally called album-oriented radio, was originally an American FM radio format focusing on album tracks by rock artists. ...
