In the 1970's Waihi saw a large influx of hippies and alternative lifestylers settle there, and around the Waikino area, bringing with them numerous cottage industries. The main road business frontage of Waikino, which traversed the beautiful Ohinemuri river as it dived into the Karangahake Gorge, [1] had it's old shops and local Lodge Hall transformed into flourishing craft and health food outlets servicing the Coromandel and local hand-craft industries. Thousands of tourists, drawn by the quirky hippie atmosphere, stopped there every week to sample healthy home made foods at the tea rooms and purchase local crafts. Sadly all this came to an abrupt end in the great Ohinemuri river floods of 1981, which literally picked the Waikino business district up and washed it downstream threw the Karangahake Gorge, including the local post office.[2] A new Post Office was later built on higher ground to which the Nambassa Trust made a donation. The population of Waihi would increase by around 5-75,000 for a short period when Nambassa was on. The Nambassa rock festivals brought much needed revenue to the town.
