History

Channel 8 debuted on March 17, 1960 as WSLA-TV (call meaning: SeLmA). The station was an independent when it signed on and became Montgomery's ABC affiliate soon afterwards. However, the station only provided a grade B signal to Montgomery. In 1964, WKAB-TV (channel 32, later WHOA-TV and now WNCF) signed on as Montgomery's ABC affiliate, but WSLA continued to broadcast ABC programming to the southern part of the market because of UHF's limited coverage of the time. is the 76th day of the year (77th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. ... WSLA applied on several occasions to increase its coverage area in order to provide city-grade coverage to Montgomery. However, the FCC blocked this move each time due to protests from then-CBS affiliate WCOV-TV and ABC affiliate WKAB-TV. Both stations were on the UHF dial, and claimed that the FCC would not be fostering the growth of UHF stations if it allowed the expansion. In addition, WCOV feared that CBS would yank its affiliation if WSLA were permitted to expand its signal. The callsign changed to WAKA in 1984 (unofficially said to stand for "We Are Kicking Ass"), shortly after it won a construction permit for the current transmitter. Bahakel Communications bought WAKA from Grisham in 1985 and remains the owner today. That same year, WAKA signed on for the first time from its current 1,757-foot tower. This gave WAKA the largest coverage of any station in the state. It provides at least secondary coverage from the fringes of the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa suburbs to the Wiregrass Region in the southeast. In 1986, CBS officially dropped its programming from WCOV, and WAKA became the sole CBS affiliate for Montgomery.
