According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,367 km˛ (914 mi˛). 2,367 km˛ (914 mi˛) of it is land and 0 km˛ (0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.01% water.

As of the census˛ of 2000, there are 1,749 people, 674 households, and 477 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). There are 791 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.63% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.52% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 4.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 674 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.60% are married couples living together, 4.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.12.


In the county the population is spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $33,000, and the median income for a family is $42,022. Males have a median income of $25,610 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,016. 16.10% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Wallace County (standard abbreviation: WA) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas.
Wallace County is home to Mount Sunflower, the highest point in Kansas at 4,039 feet (1,231 meters).

Sharon Springs is about 10 miles west of old “Fort Wallace”, sitting on the Union Pacific Railroad, and is right in the middle of the Pierre Shale in Wallace County, Kansas.
According to Peterson (1987), Mudge was collecting in the vicinity of Fort Wallace during the summer of 1870 and would have referred to the town as Eagle Tail when he collected the specimen.
