Walter E. Allen (February 23, 1911 - February 28, 1995) was an English literary critic and novelist. He is best known for his classic study The English novel; a short critical history (1954).


He was born in Aston, Birmingham; he drew on his working-class roots for All in a lifetime (1959), generally considered his best novel.He was educated at King Edward's Grammar School and the University of Birmingham, graduating in 1932 — his friends at that period included Henry Reed and Louis MacNeice.


He taught and took numerous temporary academic positions; he also worked in journalism, being at one time literary editor of the New Statesman; and was a broadcaster. In 1967 he took a position as Professor of English Studies at the University of Ulster.


He was known as an editor of George Gissing. He wrote some poetry, which appeared in John Lehmann's publications in the 1940s. He left much writing in manuscript. He died in London.

Spring 2001 – Walter Allen Wilburn (118 words)
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Walter A. Wilburn, former patient care and physical therapy assistant in the Mellen Center.
Walter worked with the Day Treatment Program and was missed by our patients when he was forced into retirement by an injury in 1996.
Walter gave much of himself to the Mellen Center and our patients, and said he felt it was his calling to help older and disabled people.

Walter Ray Allen (born July 20, 1975 in Merced, California) is an American professional basketball player for the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics, for whom he plays shooting guard.
Allen was a highly successful college basketball player at the University of Connecticut from 1993–96.
Allen played with the Bucks for the first 6½ years of his career until 47 games into the 2002–2003 season, when he, along with guards Kevin Ollie, Ronald Murray and a conditional first-round draft pick, was dealt to the Sonics for Gary Payton and Desmond Mason.
