Wandsbek (Map) is the largest (Pop.: 400.000) of seven districts that are comprising the City of Hamburg (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, Germany). The district is mostly suburban: Only three quarters in the core precinct of Wandsbek (Eilbek, Wandsbek, Marienthal) are urbane and part of the city's economic and cultural core. The more northerly parts of Wohldorf-Ohlstedt, Volksdorf, Duvenstedt are still quite rural, where one can find a mix of newer residences and farms.
They were in the first line, Altona, Harburg und Wandsbek with Altona closer to the City of Hamburg and on the western side; Wandsbek on the eastern side of Hamburg; and Harburg is in the south on the other side of the river Elbe.
Wandsbek, where my grandmother was born in 1872 and who now returned to it with us, was to become the place of my conscious childhood.
I got to know many Wandsbeker boys and probably felt myself in their circle too.At least once a week we had a duty, either a social evening, sport, or field exercises.
