Encyclopedia > Warrego River

The Warrego River is situated in south west Queensland and north west New South Wales, Australia. The river drains a catchment area of around 65000 square kilometres. The towns of Augathella, Charleville, Wyandra, and Cunnamulla are located on the banks of the river.

The river runs basically north south, from the source in the Carnarvon Ranges through to it's junction with the Darling River, downstream from Bourke.

Tributaries include the Nive, Langlo and Ward rivers.

Major flooding is not uncommon along the Warrego. The most destructive flood ever recorded in the area took place in April 1990, with the towns of Augathella and Charleville being devastated.

Two warships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named HMAS Warrego after the river.
