Warren is a town located in Herkimer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,136.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.6 km˛ (38.5 mi˛). 98.9 km˛ (38.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.73% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,136 people, 390 households, and 290 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.5/km˛ (29.8/mi˛). There are 440 housing units at an average density of 4.4/km˛ (11.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.10% White, 0.62% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 390 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.3% are married couples living together, 5.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.09.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 125.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 127.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $36,548, and the median income for a family is $39,118. Males have a median income of $27,000 versus $19,297 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,840. 12.3% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

This was an enormous county that the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extended westward to the Pacific Ocean.
The eastern boundary of Warren County is Lake George, slightly west of the New York-Vermont border.
