Washington is a census-designated place located in Wood County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,170.


The CDP is home to the Washington Works, one of the largest single facilities of chemicals manufacturing giant DuPont.

Washington is located at 39°14'17" North, 81°40'14" West (39.237991, -81.670477)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.3 km˛ (4.3 mi˛). 11.0 km˛ (4.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.53% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,170 people, 466 households, and 376 families residing in the community. The population density is 106.3/km˛ (275.6/mi˛). There are 518 housing units at an average density of 47.1/km˛ (122.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the community is 98.21% White, 0.17% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 466 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.0% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.1% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.81.


The age distribution is 23.6% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 33.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 106.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.


The median income for a household in the community is $54,483, and the median income for a community is $60,000. Males have a median income of $48,036 versus $24,712 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $25,209. 2.3% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Washington Place was built by William and Annie Washington in north Romney between 1863 and 1874 on land given to Annie by her former owner, Susan Parsons of Wappacoma plantation.
William Washington later acquired other properties on the hills north of Romney along West Virginia Route 28 and became the first African-American land developer in the state of West Virginia.
