Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,816 km˛ (1,474 mi˛). 3,772 km˛ (1,456 mi˛) of it is land and 45 km˛ (17 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,977 people, 3,762 households, and 2,738 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km˛ (7/mi˛). There are 4,138 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 87.61% White, 1.03% Asian, 0.66% Native American, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.17% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. 13.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,762 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.10.
