Washoe County is a county located in the state of Nevada. As of 2000, the population is 339,486. Its county seat is Reno6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 16,968 km˛ (6,551 mi˛). 16,426 km˛ (6,342 mi˛) of it is land and 541 km˛ (209 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 3.19% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 339,486 people, 132,084 households, and 83,741 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km˛ (54/mi˛). There are 143,908 housing units at an average density of 9/km˛ (23/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 80.41% White, 2.09% Black or African American, 1.82% Native American, 4.28% Asian, 0.46% Pacific Islander, 7.67% from other races, and 3.28% from two or more races. 16.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 132,084 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.90% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.60% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.09.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 31.00% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 102.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.80 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $45,815, and the median income for a family is $54,283. Males have a median income of $36,226 versus $27,953 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,277. 10.00% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.20% of those under the age of 18 and 6.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

New Washoe City is connected to the Reno-Carson City corridor and U.S. Highway 395 by Nevada Highway 428.
