It was founded by Charles Taze Russell and his friends in 1881. It was originally called Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society with William H. Conley as president and Russell as secretary-treasurer. It was registered in Pennsylvania December 15, 1884 with Russell as president. In 1896 the name was changed to Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, and since 1955 it has been officially known as the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania. I believe a key to identifying the spirit (or spirits) directing the Watchtower Society may be found by considering some of the supposed "scholarly" support cited by the Society in defense of their unorthodox renderings of certain New Testament passages.
When the Watchtower Society condemns Johannes Greber and his translation as "spiritism", they are identifying the source of his "translation" - the source of his doctrines - as demons.
The Watchtower Society has demonstrated confusion as to the specific identity of their spirit(s), but in each case, the spirit is portrayed as a 'good' spirit.
