In 1997 the environmentalist organisation Greenpeace occupied the islet for a short time, calling it Waveland, to protest against oil exploration under the authority of the British. Greenpeace declared the island to be a "new Global State", and offered citizenship to anyone willing to take their pledge of allegiance. The British Government's response was simply to give them permission to be there, and otherwise ignore them.
The project continued until 1999, when the company sponsoring it collapsed and the experiment ended. This interlude nevertheless marked the longest continuous habitation of the islet, at 42 days.

The eight homes in Waveland, MS now are fully finished outside as railings went on the decks and stairs went on around the houses as the last steps before the week four crews departed on Monday.
Wayland to Waveland has known her from the get-go as she became a special assistant to Mayor Tommy Longo and worked very hard for over a year to help the city recover.
Waveland and Bay St. Louis are joined on a peninsula jutting into St. Louis Bay across from Pass Christian and just west of Gulfport.

Historically, Waveland was once part of old Shieldsboro, (Bay St. Louis) It was pronounced a separate municipality in 1888.
On Monday August 29, 2005 the city of Waveland was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
