Wawatam Township is a township located in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 705.


The village of Mackinaw City is located mostly within the township.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 52.7 km˛ (20.4 mi˛). 40.7 km˛ (15.7 mi˛) of it is land and 12.0 km˛ (4.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 22.79% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 705 people, 329 households, and 207 families residing in the township. The population density is 17.3/km˛ (44.8/mi˛). There are 587 housing units at an average density of 14.4/km˛ (37.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 94.33% White, 0.28% African American, 4.40% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 329 households out of which 23.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.66.


In the township the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $35,909, and the median income for a family is $46,875. Males have a median income of $32,188 versus $30,536 for females. The per capita income for the township is $19,525. 7.5% of the population and 5.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Emmet County is located at the top of the mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula of Michigan, with Lake Michigan to the west, the Straits of Mackinac to the north, Cheboygan County to the east, and Charlevoix County to the south.
Charlevoix Township was organized in 1853 and included all ot the nine townships presently in the southern half of the county.
In 1923, Wawatam Township was the last township organized in the county, when it was detached from Carp Lake Township.
