Webb County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 193,117. By 2003 its population had been estimated to increase to 213,615. Its county seat is Laredo6. The county is named for James Webb, a state and federal judge.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 8,743 km˛ (3,376 mi˛). 8,694 km˛ (3,357 mi˛) of it is land and 48 km˛ (19 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.55% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 193,117 people, 50,740 households, and 43,433 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km˛ (58/mi˛). There are 55,206 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 82.16% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 14.00% from other races, and 2.54% from two or more races. 94.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 50,740 households out of which 53.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.60% are married couples living together, 18.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.40% are non-families. 12.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.75 and the average family size is 4.10.


In the county, the population is spread out with 36.20% under the age of 18, 11.40% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 15.60% from 45 to 64, and 7.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 92.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.90 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,100, and the median income for a family is $29,394. Males have a median income of $23,618 versus $19,018 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,759. 31.20% of the population and 26.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.40% of those under the age of 18 and 26.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The office of the Webb County Elections Administrator was established in accordance with Chapter 31, Subchapter B, of the Texas Election Code.
The functions of the office are centered around its main objective: to conduct elections incumbent upon the County of Webb in accordance with the provisions of the Texas Election Code and the maintenance of the Register of Voters for all of Webb County.
Venues of communication with the voters and citizens of Webb County as well as members of the print and electronic media must be developed by the Elections Administrator in order to provide and guarantee immediate communication with the public as to information concerning elections, registration, and registration drives in progress.
