Weihai (威海; pinyin: wēihǎi, also Weihaiwei) is a seaport city on the Bohai Gulf in north-east Shandong province, China.

In 1898, the British government leased the port of Weihaiwei on the Shantung peninsula, the southern naval gateway to the Gulf of Chihli (Po Hai), from the Manchu dynasty, to counter the Russian presence at the northern gateway of Port Arthur.
With coaling facilities and dry dock, Weihaiwei had its place, for the 32 years the lease was held, in the chain of command for British naval operations in the Far East and around the world.
