Welling today

Welling is home to a bingo hall, a football ground - Welling United F.C., a newly refurbished library with free meeting room, IT and internet facilities and a local café, The Koffi Pot, dating from 1930s, when it was called "Ferrara's" and was famous for its widely loved ice cream. The Ferrara family still live in Welling. There is also a wide range of restaurants (mostly ethnic take-aways), various independent outlets and charity shops, lining Welling High Street (ancient Watling Street), Upper Wickham Lane, and Bellegrove Road. The former Foster's School building in Upper Wickham Lane is a local landmark. The school relocated to Westbrooke Road in Welling and its original site was converted to residential use (whilst retaining the old Grade II listed main school building). The bustling high street has plenty to offer in the range of pound shops, charity shops, kebab shops on both sides of the road (directly opposite each other) and barbers. It also boasts a Co-Op and Tescos which both internally have not differed in around 20 years.


Plans have been sumitted by a local developer to Bexley Council to demolish the existing Embassy Court in Welling High Street and build on its place a new supermarket and private housing.
