The regiment become a TF battalion of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment in 1964 during the reorganisation of the army. This was until the later reorganisation of 1999, which saw the TF battalions split from the RNZIR to become multi-function battalion groups. The regiment is unique among regiments of the Commonwealth, in that it has its own country's name as a battle honour. This dates from the service of the Taranaki Volunteer Rifle Corps, from which the Taranaki Regiment is descended, during the New Zealand Land Wars, specifically in the Battle of Waireka.
The Wellington, WestCoast and TaranakiRegiment is one of six Territorial Force Regiments in the New Zealand Army.
The alliance between this Regiment and the TaranakiRegiment was sanctioned in 1913.
The alliance between the Wellington, WestCoast and the Royal Hampshire Regiment was formed on the battlefields of the Gallipoli and sanctioned in 1925.
With the amalgamation of the WellingtonWestCoastRegiment and the TaranakiRegiment in 1948 the new WellingtonWestCoast and TaranakiRegiment inherited the Battle Honours, traditions and affiliations of the two former Regiments.
It is the Infantry County Regiment of London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Middlesex, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands.
The Regiment's precedence in the British Army dates from the raising of the 2nd of Foot in 1661 for the defence of Tangier acquired by King Charles II on his marriage to Princess Catherine of Braganza.
