Encyclopedia > Welschriesling

This traditional Austrian variety is not related to Riesling at all. It is cultivated mainly in southern and southeastern Styria, Burgenland, and Weinviertel, where it is prized as an excellent base for sparkling wines.

Welschriesling wines are popular because of their refreshing fruitiness and are best drunk young. Around Lake Neusiedl this variety can also be vinified into outstanding botrytised sweet wines distinguished by their finess and breed.

International Recipes OnLine: Food and Wine Dictionary: Welschriesling (187 words)
Welschriesling's origin is a mystery, but it is well suited for the climate of central Europe, where it's extensively cultivated.
It's known as Welshriesling (or Walschriesling) in Austria, Vlassky Riesling in Czechoslovakia, Olaszriesling in Hungary, Riesling Italico in Italy, and Grasevina or Laskiriesling in the former Yugoslavia.
Welschriesling is a high-yielding vine that, in most cases, produces fairly bland wines.
