Welsh is a town located in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,380.

Geography

Welsh is located at 30°14'15" North, 92°49'14" West (30.237419, -92.820593)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.4 km² (6.3 mi²). 16.1 km² (6.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.89% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,380 people, 1,246 households, and 893 families residing in the town. The population density is 209.8/km² (543.6/mi²). There are 1,370 housing units at an average density of 85.0/km² (220.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 77.81% White, 20.98% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,246 households out of which 37.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,838, and the median income for a family is $33,600. Males have a median income of $29,760 versus $18,621 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,538. 21.5% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.4% of those under the age of 18 and 22.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
