Encyclopedia > Welsumer

Welsumer is a chicken breed from The Netherlands.


It was bred from among others Rhode Island Red and Barnevelder at the beginning of the 20th century.


It is a heavy, calm breed, with rustic-red and orange colour. Its eggs are dark-brown and spotty. There is also a dwarf breed which is similar but with light brown eggs.

  • Hen weight: 2,5-3 kg

Al in 1874 bestond er een brandweerpost in Welsum (bron historische vereniging ‘’Olster Erfgoed".)Op een lijst van 19 oktober 1874 van voorhanden materiaal stond –een spuit-1 slang met pijp, 2 lantaarns, 2 brandhaken, 26 emmers en een kruiwagen.
Op een lijst van 18 oktober 1917 waren er in Welsum 50 mannen voor de brandweer beschikbaar.
Op 10 juli 1999 is na een openbrandweermiddag, waarbij diversebrandweer demonstraties te zien waren o.a vlam in de pan – een auto uit elkaar knippen en kinderspelen met veel water, het gebouw in gebruik genomen.
