Wentworth is a small town in the far south west of New South Wales, Australia.


Wentworth is located at the confluence of the Murray River and the Darling River. During the late 1800s it was an important river port, but with the development of railways river shipping ceased and the importance of Wentworth declined.


Wentworth is the seat of Wentworth Shire local government area. Wentworth is linked to Broken Hill by the Silver City Highway.


Wentworth is named for William Charles Wentworth the explorer.

Wentworth's history is inseparable from its position where the Murray and Darling Rivers meet.
It was proclaimed as Wentworth in 1859 after William Charles Wentworth, a significant politician who advocated self-government, trial by jury and liberty of the press.
