It reached No. 21 on The Billboard Hot 100 in 1978, Zevon's highest-ranking single, and remained on the chart for 12 weeks. Though it was not a No. 1 single, the song had great cultural impact. The main melody and its rhythm were stolen from a riff at the end of the Beach Boys' song "Feel Flows", recorded on the studio album Surf's Up seven years earlier in 1971.
