McLeod played 18 times for Canada, made his international debut at 17 in 1975 against Poland in Toronto. One year later he was a member of the Olympic team at the Olympic Games in Montreal and had a memorable game against the Soviet Union in the Olympic Stadium. He was a member of Canada's national team in World Cup qualifying in 1976 and in 1980 and 1981.


In 1977 McLeod signed with Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL, he was selected to the NASL's North American All-Star team in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982, a record six times. McLeod played 188 regular season games in eight seasons with the Rowdies and scored 34 goals. The Tampa Bay Rowdies are a professional soccer team from Tampa, Florida, USA. When he ended his outdoor career McLeod played indoor with New York Cosmos and then with the Dallas Sidekicks of the Major Indoor Soccer League. In seven seasons he played 315 regular season games and scored 79 goals. He was an all-star selection three times and in 1989-90 Defender of the Year. In September of 2003 his number eight shirt was retired by the Sidekicks. The New York Cosmos (1971-1985) was a franchise in the North American Soccer League, based in New York and New Jersey. ...
