West Fargo is a city located in Cass County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,940.

West Fargo is located at 46°52'18" North, 96°53'42" West (46.871749, -96.894966)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.9 km˛ (7.3 mi˛). 18.9 km˛ (7.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.14% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,940 people, 5,771 households, and 4,091 families residing in the city. The population density is 791.3/km˛ (2,049.2/mi˛). There are 5,968 housing units at an average density of 316.1/km˛ (818.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 96.40% White, 0.42% African American, 1.04% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


The top 6 ancestry groups in the city are German (47.9%), Norwegian (39.7%), Irish (8.3%), Swedish (7.2%), French (5.2%), English (4.8%).


There are 5,771 households out of which 40.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.09.


In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $44,542, and the median income for a family is $51,765. Males have a median income of $32,105 versus $22,148 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,368. 6.3% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.8% of those under the age of 18 and 14.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
