Encyclopedia > West Goscote

West Goscote was a hundred of Leicestershire, that arose from the division of the ancient Goscote hundred into two. It covers the north west of the county, an area broadly corresponding to the western part of Charnwood district along with North West Leicestershire.

The hundred's main town was Loughborough. Other settlements include Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Coalville and Overseal (now in Derbyshire).

West of this district lies the Leicestershire coalfield, where the poor state of development of the Carboniferous Limestone shows that the Charnian rocks formed shoals or islands in the Carboniferous Limestone sea.
The rest of the county is almost equally divided between the red Keuper Marls of the Trias on the west and the grey limestones and shales of the Lias on the east.
Before the 17th century Goscote was divided into East and West Goscote, and since then the hundreds have undergone little change.
Walsall: Economic history | British History Online (19199 words)
Barnhall lay on the parish boundary west of Broad Lane, and Litchkin adjoined it on the south.
By then operations had begun further west in the concealed veins, which were worked by the pillarand-stall method.
Besides the Goscote works there were 4 engineers and machinists in 1851, 3 in 1860, and 4 in 1873, when there were also 3 firms of boilermakers including a second at Goscote.
