West Homestead is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,197.


Geography

West Homestead is located at 40°23'40" North, 79°54'55" West (40.394369, -79.915224)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.6 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.4 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 9.90% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,197 people, 956 households, and 623 families residing in the borough. The population density is 932.2/km˛ (2,408.9/mi˛). There are 1,106 housing units at an average density of 469.3/km˛ (1,212.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 89.53% White, 8.83% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 956 households out of which 22.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.87.


In the borough the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $33,309, and the median income for a family is $44,338. Males have a median income of $35,033 versus $27,700 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $17,327. 13.7% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

West Overton Village was named to the National Register of Historic Districts in 1985 as an outstanding example of a 19th century rural industrial village.
West Overton is on PA 819 between the towns of Mount Pleasant and Scottdale.
