West Liberty is a city located in Muscatine County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,332.

Geography

West Liberty is located at 41°34'17" North, 91°15'40" West (41.571517, -91.261229)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.0 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,332 people, 1,150 households, and 801 families residing in the city. The population density is 824.7/km² (2,136.4/mi²). There are 1,195 housing units at an average density of 295.8/km² (766.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.20% White, 0.30% African American, 0.42% Native American, 3.54% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 25.00% from other races, and 3.54% from two or more races. 40.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,150 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.46.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 15.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,925, and the median income for a family is $41,667. Males have a median income of $29,963 versus $24,306 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,420. 7.3% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
