Encyclopedia > Western Freeway

Western Freeway M8 is freeway linking Melbourne to Ballarat. It starts in Deer Park and ends at Burrumbeet, just beyond Ballarat where it continues as Western Highway A8 onwards to South Australia and Adelaide. Both Western Freeway and Western Highway beyond Ballarat are part of the National Highway network for the Melbourne-Adelaide route.

The freeway supersedes the Western Highway along its path. The old Western Highway stretches are either converted or left alone in the older parallel track.

Currently Deer Park is planned to be bypassed, terminating the freeway at Western Ring Road which links it to all other Melbourne and interstate freeways and the CBD.

Towns along the way include:

  • Bacchus Marsh
  • Ballan
  • Bungaree
  • Ballarat
