Founded in 1903, the WesternPacific Railroad was built as a portion of the Gould family's efforts to create a transcontinental railroad in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The WesternPacific was acquired in 1983 by Union Pacific Corporation, the owner of its long-time rival, the Union Pacific Railroad.

As the Pacific straddles the ± 180° meridian, the West Pacific (or westernPacific, near Asia) is actually in the Eastern Hemisphere, while the East Pacific (or eastern Pacific, near the Americas) is actually in the Western Hemisphere.
