The Westland Whirlwind was designed by W.E.W. Petter, in response to the 1935 specification F35/37.
The Whirlwind would distinguish itself as a ground attack aircraft in Europe until the arrival of the Hawker Typhoon in 1943.
June 1943 saw the replacement of the Whirlwinds in 263 squadron with the arrival of Hurricane IVs.
