The Westmeath Examiner is the main broadsheet newspaper in Westmeath. It was founded in 1882. The Westmeath Examiner is sold as the Westmeath Independent in the Athlone area of the county and as the Westmeath Examiner in the Mullingar area of the county - both with county level news and local area-specific news. In May 2004 the paper was sold to by its owners Martin Nally and Ronald Carroll to Celtic News - a subsidiary of the Scottish owned Dunfermline Press - along with the Offaly Independent for a sum believed to be in excess of €20m.
