Westmorland is a city located in Imperial County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,131.


Geography

Westmorland is located at 33°2'17" North, 115°37'20" West (33.037923, -115.622292)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,131 people, 625 households, and 501 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,057.0/km˛ (5,263.6/mi˛). There are 667 housing units at an average density of 643.8/km˛ (1,647.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 55.75% White, 1.03% Black or African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 39.42% from other races, and 2.72% from two or more races. 82.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 625 households out of which 47.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 19.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.7% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.41 and the average family size is 3.87.


In the city the population is spread out with 35.8% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,365, and the median income for a family is $26,667. Males have a median income of $27,500 versus $19,107 for females. The per capita income for the city is $8,941. 27.2% of the population and 27.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.9% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Westmorland is a small city of 2,000 about 26 miles north of the border.
The City of Westmorland currently has commitments of $3.6 million in grants and loans ($2.07 million), mainly from the United States Department of Agriculture and is planning to apply for approximately $1.8 million from the North American Development Bank in BEIF (Border Environment Infrastructure Fund) grants.
