wasters and wooden swords (4531 words)
One modern source stated that these “wafters” (wasters) were actually swords “with the blade set at right angles to the grip, so that a blow would be struck with the flat rather than with the edge”, but it gave no source for this claim.
A Medieval waster was apparently distinct from simple sticks, clubs, bats, batons/battoons, batunes/bastons, truncheons, etc., in that it was specifically made as a mock weapon for sword practice (although these other items could also serve that purpose).
The term waster in English may derive from the quality of the tool being expendable or something that can be discarded or also a person who wasted, spoiled, or destroyed things.
Waster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (130 words)
In terms of weapons and martial arts, a waster is typically a wooden replica of a particular weapon with which the user practices.
The purpose of using a waster is to preserve your real weapon when practicing against a pell (training pole) or sparring companion.
The term "waster" is derived from the fact that the weapon is meant to be used in damaging situations, such as practicing, when using a real (and valuable) weapon would be both dangerous and impractical.
