Wheaton College fined for polluting river - The Boston Globe (358 words)
Wheaton College has been fined $75,000 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for polluting the Rumford River in Norton.
In 2003, EPA inspectors found that wastewater discharge from the school's Norton campus contained high levels of organic pollution and fecal coliform bacteria -- indicators that the school's wastewater treatment facility, which was built in the 1950s, was not filtering and treating the water properly.
Wheaton College could have faced a fine up to $157,500, said Jeffrey Kopf, an enforcement attorney for the EPA.
