 | Wheaton College has been fined $75,000 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for polluting the Rumford River in Norton. |
| In 2003, EPA inspectors found that wastewater discharge from the school's Norton campus contained high levels of organic pollution and fecal coliform bacteria -- indicators that the school's wastewater treatment facility, which was built in the 1950s, was not filtering and treating the water properly. |
| Wheaton College could have faced a fine up to $157,500, said Jeffrey Kopf, an enforcement attorney for the EPA. |
