Because of cross-pollination, the two dances may look pretty similar. Some say that Whip is more sensual and uses more body work (rolls, waves, etc.), while West Coast Swing puts more emphasis on footwork. However this may well be attributed to the prevalent music used: with slower music, proficient "Westies" may go extremely sensual.
In the whipdance, though there are various versions of it, depending on the locality, the girl is almost never struck with the whip, unless, of course, she does not perform well.
