"Whipper" Billy Watson (1917 July 25- 1990 February 4), born William Potts, was a Canadian heavyweight wrestler and a five-time world wrestling champion. In three decades in the ring, he wrestled more than 6300 matches. Watson began his career in England in 1936, where English sportswiters dubbed him "Whipper" because of one of his signature throws, the "Irish whip". In 1940, he and his wife returned to Canada, and he began wrestling at Maple Leaf Gardens. He soon became a crowd favorite, and within a few years, was a mainstream celebrity and one of Toronto's most popular citizens. Watson held the British Empire title throughout the 1940s and 1950s; in 1947 and again in 1956, he won the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight title. 1917 (MCMXVII) was a common year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar (see link for calendar) or a common year starting on Tuesday of the 13-day slower Julian calendar. ...
